HISTORY OF HOLY KAABA OR BAITULLAH

HISTORY OF HOLY KAABA OR BAITULLAH

In the province of Hijaz in the western portion of Saudi Arabia, not far from the Red Sea, there lies the city of Makkah. In the center of this town there is a square building made of stones, but its impact on history and human beings is completely unmatched. Since time immemorial world travellers have well-known this town and this stone built house. This is Baitullah, the House of ALLAH Almighty. Its antiquity and sanctity is older than history itself.

The Baitullah or Holy Kaaba is the building towards which all Muslims face 5 times a day, everyday, in namaz. This has been the case since the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over 1400 years ago. Literally, Holy Kaaba in Arabic means a high place with prestige and respect. The word Holy Kaaba may also be derivative of a word meaning a cube.

The other names of the Holy Kaaba, are Bait ul Ateeq - which means, according to meaning, the ancient and earliest. According to the second meaning, it means liberating and independent. Both meanings could be taken. Bait ul Haram - the honourable house. Scholars and historians say that the Holy Kaaba has been reconstructed between 5 to 12 times.Tradition goes that the Holy Kaaba was ordained by ALLAH Almighty to be built in the shape of the House in Jannat or Heaven called Baitul Ma'amoor.

ALLAH Almighty in his infinite Mercy ordained a similar site on earth and Hazrat Adam (AS) was the first to construct this place. There is not any doubt that it was referring to the stone built house at city Makkah. Holy Quran brought this story into the complete light of history. Verse 3:95-96 of Holy Quran Say, “ALLAH has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists. Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and guidance for the worlds. From the above verses Holy Quran strongly establishes the fact that Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) was the real founder of the Holy Kaaba.

When Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) built the Holy Kaaba in Makkah, His prayers were that this place must remain a center of worship (ibadah) for all good and pious people. Ever since, Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) the son of Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) who helped His father to construct this place and his descendants remained the custodians of the Holy Kaaba.

Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) built this House for pious worship to the only ALLAH Almighty. But within His life people disobeyed his orders and began to put idols inside the Holy Kaaba. Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) had to clean the Holy Kaaba of these idols and of idle worshippers.
